Gauge
The thickness of body jewellery, where a smaller gauge number means a thicker piece.
Body jewellery thickness is measured in gauge (g). The numbers run backwards: 14g is about 1.6 mm, 16g about 1.2 mm, 18g about 1.0 mm and 20g about 0.8 mm.
Gauge only describes thickness. The length or diameter of the piece is measured separately, usually in millimetres.
