How to show different size charts on different Shopify products
Show the right size chart on every Shopify product: by product, collection, tag, vendor or product metafield, which chart wins when several match, and how to show more than one chart on a page.
Most stores need more than one size chart. Dresses don't fit like jeans, a kids' range has its own sizes, and two brands in the same store often cut differently. Showing one chart on every product confuses customers and leads to returns.
This guide shows how to give each Shopify product the right size chart, without setting up every product by hand.
Can Shopify do this on its own?
Not easily. Shopify has no size chart feature. The free method, a page shown in your theme's pop-up block, shows the same page on every product. To vary it, you'd create a page per chart, add a page metafield to your products and fill it in on every single product, then connect it to the block. Every new product needs the same manual step.
A size chart app does this with rules instead: you say "show this chart on these products" once, and new products follow the rule automatically.
Ways to assign a size chart in Jotly
When you create or edit a size chart in Jotly, you choose which products show it:
| Method | Use it when | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Specific products | A one-off item needs its own chart | Free |
| Collections | Your collections match your size charts, like "Dresses" or "Kids". New products in the collection get the chart automatically | Free |
| All products | You want a store-wide chart, or a fallback for products without a more specific one | Free |
| Tags | Sizing cuts across collections, like a "slim-fit" or "petite" tag | Global and above |
| Vendors | Each brand you sell has its own sizing | Global and above |
| Advanced conditions | A chart should only show when several things are true, like a collection and a tag | Enterprise |
You can also assign a chart by product metafield, a detail like fabric or fit that you already keep on your products. See "Using product metafields" below.
Jotly's free plan includes up to 2 size guides, assigned to products or collections. Paid plans include unlimited size charts and a 7-day free trial.
Examples
- A clothing store with men's and women's ranges: one chart on the "Men" collection and one on the "Women" collection. Every new product added to either collection shows the right chart.
- A store selling several brands: one chart per vendor, so each brand's own sizing shows on its products.
- Fit variations: a regular chart on the "Shirts" collection, plus a separate chart for products tagged "slim-fit".
- Fabric-based sizing: a product metafield like
custom.fabric_type, with a stretch-fabric chart for products where it's "Stretch".
Which chart shows when several match?
A product can match more than one chart: for example it's in the "Shirts" collection and tagged "slim-fit". Customers always see one main size chart, chosen like this:
- The most specific rule wins. A chart assigned to the product itself beats everything else. After that come advanced conditions, then product metafields, then collections, tags and vendors, in that order. All products is only used when nothing else matches.
- Within the same kind of rule, the higher priority wins. Each chart has a Priority number; the higher number shows. Use it when a product sits in two collections that both have a chart.
- On a tie, the most recently created chart wins.
So a store-wide chart on All products is a safe fallback: it never overrides a more specific chart.

Using product metafields
Metafields let you assign charts from data you already keep on your products.
- Create a product metafield definition in Shopify (Settings → Custom data → Products), for example
custom.fabric_type. - Fill it in on your products.
- In Jotly, choose Product Metafield as the targeting method, pick the metafield and enter the value to match, like "Stretch".
The value has to match exactly, including capital letters. Jotly supports true/false, single line text and colour metafields. See how to show a size chart based on a product metafield.
Show more than one size chart on a product
Sometimes one product really needs two charts, like a suit with a jacket and trousers, or a top with a separate fit guide. On the Enterprise plan, Jotly's extra size chart slots let you show up to three more size charts on the same product page, each in its own spot, as a button or directly on the page. Ask Jotly support to turn it on.
Each slot follows the same assignment rules, on its own. See how to show multiple size charts on a product page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I show a different size chart on each Shopify product?
Yes. With Jotly you assign each size chart to specific products, collections, tags, vendors or a product metafield, so every product shows the chart that fits it.
Do new products get a size chart automatically?
Yes, when the chart is assigned by collection, tag, vendor or metafield. A new product that joins the collection, or gets the tag, shows the chart straight away.
What happens if a product matches two size charts?
The most specific assignment wins: the product itself first, then advanced conditions, product metafields, collections, tags and vendors, and all products last. Between charts of the same kind, the higher priority number wins.
Can I set one size chart for my whole store?
Yes. Assign it to All products. It shows on every product that doesn't have a more specific chart.
