If your Shopify store sells in more than one language, your size chart needs to as well. A customer reading the product page in German and then opening a size chart in English has to guess what "Inseam" or "Chest" means, and guessing is how wrong sizes and returns happen.

This guide covers how to translate size charts on Shopify, from the free method to translating every chart in a few clicks.

What needs translating

A size chart has more text than it looks:

  • Measurement names: chest, waist, inseam, sleeve length.
  • Instructions: the "how to measure" steps.
  • Fit notes: "runs small", "relaxed fit", "size up if between sizes".
  • The size chart button: "Size chart", "Size guide".
  • The chart's title in the pop-up.

Sizes themselves (S, M, L, 38, 40) usually stay the same, though some markets use their own size systems.

The free way: translate the page

If you show your size chart with your theme's pop-up block and a Shopify page, translate that page like any other store content: with Shopify's own translation tools or a translation app, once for each of your store's languages.

It works, but it has the same limits as the free method itself: one chart for every product, no unit switch, and every chart and every edit has to be translated again by hand.

Translate size charts with Jotly

Jotly translates size charts for you, on the Global plan and above.

Into your store's languages

Jotly translates your charts into the languages your store sells in. Customers see the size chart, its name and the button text in the language they're shopping in.

Into any language, with AI

Need a language your store doesn't have yet? Jotly's AI translation can translate a size chart into any language in seconds. You can then edit any word, so measurement names and fit notes read exactly the way you want.

The size chart button

The button that opens the size chart has its own translations. In Jotly, open Settings, then the Button settings tab, and add the button text for each language under Add translations for button text. Customers in a language without a translation see your default button text. See how to translate the button text.

Start from a template in your language

Jotly's 123 ready-made templates can be added in English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch and Polish. The intro, the table headers, the measuring steps and the closing note all come in the language you pick, so you start with a size chart that's already written for that market. The labelled measuring drawings are the same in every language.

Tips for translated size charts

  • Check the measurement names. Words like "inseam", "rise" or "band size" have specific terms in each language. Read the translation once, or ask a native speaker, before you publish.
  • Think about units. Most of Europe uses centimetres, the US uses inches. Turn on the cm/in switch so every customer can read the chart in the units they know.
  • Translate the fit notes too. A note like "runs small, size up" is often the most useful line on the chart.
  • Keep the drawings. A labelled how-to-measure drawing works in every language and helps when a translated word is unfamiliar.
