Clothing measurements

Chest width

The distance straight across the front of a top, from armpit seam to armpit seam, measured with the garment laid flat.

Chest width is a garment measurement: it describes the top itself, not the person wearing it. Because it's measured across one side of the garment, doubling it gives the approximate chest circumference of the top.

Body size charts use chest circumference instead: the measurement around the fullest part of the wearer's chest. Make sure your size chart says which one it shows.
