Size charts for jewellery stores on Shopify

Ring sizes differ between the US, UK and Europe. Show every system, the inner diameter in millimetres, and how to measure at home.

Rings are sized in fractions of a millimetre: one full US ring size is only about 0.8 mm of inside diameter. On top of that, countries name sizes differently. The US uses numbers, the UK and Australia use letters, and Europe uses the inside circumference in millimetres.

Most shoppers don't know their ring size, so a jewellery size chart has two jobs: convert between the systems your customers use, and show them how to measure at home. Bangles and body jewellery add their own measurements on top.

What your size chart needs

1

Ring sizes in every system

The US uses numbers, the UK and Australia use letters, and Europe uses the inner circumference in millimetres. Show the ones your customers use.

2

A way to measure at home

Most shoppers don't know their ring size. Explain how to measure a ring they already own, or a finger with a strip of paper.

3

Thickness for body jewellery

Body jewellery needs the gauge (thickness) as well as the length or diameter, since a piercing has to match the gauge.

Measurements that matter

Common mistakes to avoid

Only one sizing system

A shopper who knows they're a UK "N" can't use a chart that only lists US numbers. Show every system you sell to.

Mixing up diameter and circumference

Diameter is measured straight across the inside of the ring; circumference is the distance around it, about 3.14 times larger. Label each column so shoppers compare like with like.

No advice for wide bands

A wide band covers more of the finger and feels tighter than a thin band of the same size. Say whether shoppers should size up for wide styles.

Sizing bangles by the wrist

A solid bangle has to pass over the hand, so its inner diameter must fit the widest part of the hand, not the wrist.

  • Inner diameter and circumference in millimetres, clearly labelled
  • Steps for measuring an existing ring or a finger at home
  • A note on wide bands and what to do between sizes
  • Inner diameter for bangles, measured to fit over the hand
  • Gauge and length or diameter for body jewellery

How Jotly helps

Common questions

What if a shopper is between two ring sizes?

Suggest the larger size, especially for wide bands. Fingers are also slightly bigger at the end of the day and in warm weather.

Is EU ring size the same as the circumference?

Yes. Under ISO 8653, the European ring size is the inside circumference in millimetres, so an EU 54 is about 54 mm around.

How can a customer find their ring size at home?

The most reliable way is to measure the inside diameter of a ring that already fits the same finger. Otherwise, wrap a strip of paper around the base of the finger, mark where it overlaps, and measure the length: that's the circumference. The ring also has to pass over the knuckle, so check that too.

What does gauge mean in body jewellery?

Gauge is the thickness of the bar or wire. The numbering runs backwards: a smaller gauge number means thicker jewellery, so 14G is thicker than 18G. A piercing has to match the gauge.

How should bangles be sized?

By inner diameter. A solid bangle has to slide over the hand, so shoppers should measure around the widest part of the hand, with the thumb tucked in, and compare it with the bangle's circumference.
